León Airport opened in June 1999. It is located on the Virgen del Camino air station, six kilometres away from the provincial capital. Currently, it is an aerodrome used jointly as a military base and an airport open to civil traffic.

To meet the growing passenger demand, in October 2005 the runway and aircraft parking apron were extended and an ILS/I landing system was installed to improve operability under adverse weather conditions. In December 2007, the runway was extended again. Finally, the new terminal opened in October 2010.
