The airports in the Aena network closed October with 4,458,349 passengers, 81.9% fewer than in the same month last year, along with 93,859 aircraft movements, 55.4% lower, and 83,427 tons of freight, 21.2% lower.
Out of the total number of passengers registered in October, 4,435,843 were commercial passengers with 2,713,295 on domestic flights, 63.1% less than in October 2019, and 1,722,548 on international routes, down by 90%. The decline in passenger traffic has continued this month due to new restrictions on travel both in Spain and the rest of the world caused by the further spread of COVID-19.
Traffic by airports
In October, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in the network at 736,113 travellers, which is an 86.6% decrease compared to the same month in 2019. It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with 712,283 (-84.7%); Palma de Mallorca, with 395,906 (-86.5%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 329,337 (-82.4%); Gran Canaria, with 303,575 (-72.1%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, with 249,498 (-50.7%) and Alicante-Elche, with 241,178 (-83.1%).
In terms of the number of operations, the airport that recorded the highest number of movements in October was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 11,386 (-69.5%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 8,939 (-71%); Palma de Mallorca with 6,584 (-69.5%); Gran Canaria with 5,276 (-49.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 5,044 (-61.6%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 4,178 (-33.9%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 4,747 (-24.8%); Seville with 3,111 (-45.2%) and Alicante-Elche with 3,025 (-67.9%).
The airports mainly operating non-commercial flights with the highest number of movements in October were Madrid-Cuatro Vientos with 5,190 operations (+7.8%), Sabadell with 4,437 (-1.8%) and Jerez with 4,298 (-16.9%).
As far as goods are concerned, 83,427 tons of freight were handled throughout the network in October, 21.2% less than in the same month in 2019 due to the fact that a very significant part of regular freight is carried in commercial passenger planes.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 40,452 tons (-24.9%); Zaragoza with 19,940 tons (-4.4%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 11,143 tons (-35.6%); and Vitoria with 6,381 tons (+2.7%).
