The airports in Aena's network closed November with 2,913,072 passengers, 84.1% fewer than in the same month last year, along with 72,906 aircraft movements, 55.8% lower, and 77,289 tons of freight, 25.1% lower.
Out of the total number of passengers registered in November, 2,885,813 were commercial passengers with 1,725,038 on domestic flights, 73.3% less than in November 2019, and 1,160,775 on international routes, down by 90.2%. The decline in passenger traffic has continued this month due to restrictions on travel both in Spain and the rest of the world caused by the spread of COVID-19.
Traffic by airports
In November, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in the network at 697,692 travellers, which is an 85.4% decrease compared to the same month in 2019. It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with 341,502 (-90.7%); Gran Canaria, with 305,070 (-74.4%); Palma de Mallorca, with 198,580 (-80.2%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, with 189,058 (-59.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 157,089 (-86.6%) and Tenerife Sur, with 151,486 (-84.6%).
In terms of the number of operations, the airport that recorded the highest number of movements in November was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 10,001 (-70,5%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 5,324 (-78.7%); Gran Canaria with 5,127 (-52.6%); Palma de Mallorca with 3,478 (-60.5%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 3,739 (-38.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 3,164 (-64.9%); César Manrique-Lanzarote with 2,325 (-51.8%) and Valencia with 2,052 (-64.9%).
The airports mainly operating non-commercial flights with the highest number of movements in November were Madrid-Cuatro Vientos with 4,324 operations (+39.6%), Sabadell with 4,105 (-6%) and Jerez with 3,154 (-16.7%).
As far as cargo is concerned, 77,289 tons of freight were handled across the network in November, 25.1% less than in the same month in 2019 due to the fact that a very significant part of regular freight is carried in commercial passenger planes.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 39,757 tons (-25.3%); Zaragoza with 15,270 tons (-27%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 10,189 tons (-36.8%), and Vitoria with 6,478 tons (+14.3%).
