The airports in the Aena network closed January with 2,814,424 passengers, 83.4% fewer than in the same month last year, along with 61,440 aircraft movements, 60.8% lower, and 62,086 tons of freight, -28.6% lower.
Out of the total number of travellers recorded in January, 2,780,835 were commercial passengers with 1,236,326 on international flights, 88.7% less than in January 2020, and 1,544,509 on domestic flights, down by 74%. The decline in passenger traffic has continued this month due to restrictions on travel both in Spain and the rest of the world caused by the spread of COVID-19.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in the first month of the year at 845,168, which is a -81.9% decrease over January 2020. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with 411,486 (-87.9%); Gran Canaria with 234,986 (-79.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 168,111 (-83.9%); Palma de Mallorca with 165,533 (-79.8%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 137,863
(-68.9%) and Tenerife Sur with 97,926 (-89.7%).
In terms of the number of operations, the airport that recorded the highest number of movements in January was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 10,138 (-69.5%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 5,572 flights (-76.2%); Gran Canaria with 4,382 (-58.6%); Palma de Mallorca with 3,333 (-56.5%); Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 2,941 (-50.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 2,895 (-65.7%); Valencia with 2,052 (-62.5%) and Seville with 1,741 (-63.2%).
The airports mainly operating non-commercial flights with the highest number of movements in January were Sabadell with 3,591 operations (-3.9%); Jerez with 2,786 (-19.2%) and Madrid-Cuatro Vientos with 1,403 (-57.7%).
As far as goods are concerned, 62,086 tons of freight were handled throughout the network in January, 28.6% less than in the same month in 2020 due to the fact that a very significant part of regular freight is carried in commercial passenger planes.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 26,969 tons (-41.2%); Zaragoza with 15,453 tons (+3.2%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 9,474 tons (-31.2%); and Vitoria with 5,695 tons (+8.4%).
