The airports in Aena’s network handled over 29.4 million passengers in August, 4% more than in the same month in 2018. The total number of travellers came to precisely 29,479,657, of which 29,401,562 were commercial passengers with 21,114,419 on international flights, 3.2% more than in August 2018, and 8,287,143 on domestic flights, up by 6%.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in August at 5,790,264, which is a 7.5% increase over the same month in 2018. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 5,410,064 (5.1% more); Palma de Mallorca with 4,281,185 (+1.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 2,205,899 (+4.1%); Alicante-Elche with 1,692,011 (+8.3%); Ibiza with 1,376,350 (+0.7%); Gran Canaria with 1,082,402 (-5.5%); Tenerife Sur with 912,874 (+3.9%); and Valencia with 889,748 (+7.9%).
In the first eight months of 2019 passenger traffic has risen by 5% with a total of 186,805,850 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, there were 234,738 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in August, 1.4% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 37,140 (+4.3%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 32,673 flights (+1.9%); Palma de Mallorca with 28,790 (-3.4%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 15,641 (+2%); Ibiza with 12,263 (-1.7%); Alicante-Elche with 10,757 (+3.9%); Gran Canaria with 10,606 (-2.6%); Valencia with 7,405 (+0.4%); and Tenerife Norte with 6,788 (+2.7%).
In the first eight months of 2019, the airports in Aena’s network operated 1,600,876 aircraft for departures and arrivals which is a 3.8% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
In August 83,743 tons of freight were carried which is a 1.7% increase compared to the same period in 2018.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 44,325 tons (+7.2%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 13,188 tons (-4.6%); Zaragoza with 15,611 tons (-2%); and Vitoria with 4,113 tons (-2.7%).
From January to August, 671,698 tons of freight was handled at the airports in Aena’s network, which represents an increase of 3.6% with respect to the first eight months of 2018.
