The airports in Aena’s network handled over 27.1 million passengers in September, 3.4% more than in the same month in 2018. The total number of travellers came to precisely 27,136,898, of which 27,063,758 were commercial passengers with 19,174,837 on international flights, 2.1% more than in September 2018, and 7,888,921 on domestic flights, up by 6.7%.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in September at 5,571,359, which is a 7.1% increase over the same month in 2018. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 5,106,791 (5.4% more); Palma de Mallorca with 3,767,020 (+0.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 2,026,920 (+2.4%); Alicante-Elche with 1,552,541 (+8.5%); Ibiza with 1,148,089 (-1.2%); Gran Canaria with 987,333 (-6.1%); Tenerife Sur with 829,249 (-3.1%); and Valencia with 791,361 (+9.1%).
In the first nine months of 2019 passenger traffic rose by 4.8% with a total of 213,942,748 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, there were 222,050 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in September, 0.7% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 37,292 (+3.1%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 32,111 flights (+1.6%); Palma de Mallorca with 25,718 (-3.5%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 14,038 (+1.7%); Alicante-Elche with 10,037 (5%); Gran Canaria with 9,773 (-4%); Ibiza with 9,482 (-4%); Valencia with 6,998 (8.3%); and Tenerife Norte with 6,314 (+1.2%).
In the first nine months of 2019, the airports in Aena’s network operated 1,822,926 aircraft for departures and arrivals which is a 3.4% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
In September 92,444 tons of freight was carried which is a 6.1% increase compared to the same period in 2018.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 47,350 tons (+9.1%); Zaragoza with 16,603 tons (-1.8%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 15,921 tons (7.4%); and Vitoria with 5,203 tons (8.5%).
From January to September, 764,142 tons of freight was handled at the airports in Aena’s network, which represents an increase of 3.8% with respect to the first nine months of 2018.
