The airports in Aena’s network handled over 23.8 million passengers in May, 6.4% more than in the same month in 2017. The total number of travellers came to precisely 23,807,119, of which 23,742,567 were commercial passengers with 16,780,216 on international flights, 4.2% more than in May 2017, and 6,962,351 on domestic flights, up by 12.1%.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in May at 4,959,964, which is a 9.6% increase over the same month in 2017. It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 4,549,769 (5.2% more); Palma de Mallorca with 3,151,663 (+3.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 1,836,655 (+1.5%); Alicante-Elche, with 1,307,789 (+1.5%); Gran Canaria with 974,556 (+8.7%); Ibiza with 874,230 (+6%); Tenerife Sur with 755,263 (-6%); Valencia with 681,746 (+15.6%); Seville with 572,960 (+26%); Lanzarote with 570,149 (+2.1%); and Bilbao with 512,255 (+13%).
In the first five months of the year passenger traffic rose by 7.3% compared to the same period in the previous year with a total of 95,323,551 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, there were 207,804 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in May, 5.5% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 35,628 (+5.4%), followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 30,704 flights (+2.1%); Palma de Mallorca with 22,929 (+3.7%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 13,187 (+0.3%); Gran Canaria with 10,008 (+18.7%); Alicante-Elche with 8,944 (-1%); Ibiza with 7,863 (+3.8%); Valencia with 6,883 (+12.7%); Tenerife Norte with 6,361 (+33.3%); Seville with 5,128 (+14.5%); and Jerez with 5,063 (+17.1%).
From January to May 2018 the airports in Aena’s network operated 854,532 aircraft for departures and arrivals which is a 6.2% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
In May over 83,000 tons of freight were carried which is a 10.2% increase compared to May 2017.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 42,873 tons (11.3%); Barcelona-El Prat with 14,429 tons (+10.1%); Zaragoza with 12,572 tons (+19.9%); and Vitoria with 5,526 tons (+8.2%).
From January to May 402,845 tons of freight were handled in the airports in Aena’s network which means 14% growth compared to the first five months in 2017.
