The airports in the Aena network handled over 23 million passengers in April, 7.3% more than in the same month in 2018. Specifically, the total passenger number was 23,206,276. Of these, 23,140,259 were commercial passengers, with 16,008,386 on international flights, 7.3% more than in April 2018, and 7,131,873 on domestic flights, a 7.3% increase. It should be noted that last year’s Easter operations took place mostly in March while this year they will be conducted entirely in April (between Thursday 18 April and Sunday 21 April) and this has had an impact on some tourist airports.
The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in April with 5,052,318, which is 5.2% more than in the same month in 2018. It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 4,522,810 (+6.6%), Palma de Mallorca with 2,514,286 (+14.2%), Málaga-Costa del Sol with 1,827,586 (+7.6%), Alicante-Elche with 1,341,713 (+9.7%), Gran Canaria with 1,103,924 (+1.1%), Tenerife Sur with 942,771 (+5.4%), Valencia with 752,055 (+12.9%), Sevilla with 682,791 (+21.5%) and César Manrique-Lanzarote with 629,145 (+4.8%).
In the first four months of 2019, passenger traffic rose by 6.3%, with 76,014,318 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, Aena’s airport network handled a total of 194,422 aircraft movements in April, 2.5% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 34,834 (+3%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 29,763 flights (+4.3%), Palma de Mallorca with 18,980 (+10.6%), Málaga-Costa del Sol with 13,236 (+7.5%), Gran Canaria with 10,612 (-1.7%), Alicante-Elche with 9,073 (+7.3%), Valencia with 6,523 (+0.6%), Tenerife Norte with 6,213 (+2.1%), Tenerife Sur with 5,828 (+3.0%), Sevilla with 5,680 (+13.6%) and César Manrique-Lanzarote with 5,123 (+4.0%).
In the first four months of 2019, the airports in Aena’s network handled 685,424 aircraft for departures and arrivals, which is a 6.0% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
A total of 86,137 tons of freight were carried which is a 2.7% increase compared to the same month in 2018.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 44,010 tons (+3.0% increase), Zaragoza with 15,874 tons (+7.7%) which continues to record major growth in freight, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 13,971 tons (+2.0%) and Vitoria with 4,974 tons (-3.1%).
From January to April, 336,815 tons of freight were handled in the airports in Aena’s network, which means 5.3% growth compared to the first four months in 2018.
