The airports in Aena’s network handled over 21.6 million passengers in April, 2.9% more than in the same month in 2017. The total number of travellers came to precisely 21,632,843, of which 21,567,098 were commercial passengers with 14,918,176 on international flights, 0.4% more than in April 2017, and 6,648,922 on domestic flights, up by 8.9%. It should be noted that last year’s Easter operations took place entirely in April while this year they were conducted mostly in March (between Thursday 28 March and Sunday 1 April) which has had an impact on some tourist airports.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in April at 4,802,596, which is a 7% increase over the same month in 2017. It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 4,241,905 (3.1% more); Palma de Mallorca with 2,200,689 (-1.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 1,697,759 (+0.1%); Alicante-Elche with 1,222,639 (-0.5%); Gran Canaria with 1,092,340 (-2.1%); Tenerife Sur with 894,553 (-11.1%); Valencia with 665,947 (+18.5%); Lanzarote with 600,312 (-8%); Fuerteventura with 507,318 (-4.6%), and Seville with 562,143 (+22.4%).
In the first four months of the year passenger traffic rose by 7.6% with a total of 71,516,432 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, there was a total of 189,704 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in April, 5.4% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 33,835 (+5.7%), followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 28,545 flights (+3.4%); Palma de Mallorca with 17,166 (+0.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 12,311 (+2.8%); Gran Canaria with 10,801 (+11.7%); Alicante-Elche with 8,458 (+0.4%); Valencia with 6,486 (+17.3%); Tenerife Norte with 6,088 (+26.5%); Tenerife Sur with 5,660 (-8.3%), and Seville with 5,001 (+23.7%).
In the first four months of 2018 the airports in Aena’s network operated 646,728 aircraft for departures and arrivals which is a 6.5% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
In April about 83,890 tons of freight were carried which is an 18.4% increase compared to April 2017.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 42,731 tons (15.8%); Zaragoza with 14,736 tons (+37.7%); Barcelona-El Prat with 13,693 tons (+16.2%), and Vitoria with 5,132 tons (+21.7%).
From January to April 319,838 tons of freight were handled in the airports in Aena’s network which means 15% growth compared to the first four months of 2017.
