The airports in the Aena network closed the month of July with 6,987,828 passengers, 76.2% fewer than in the same month last year, along with 118,467 aircraft movements, 50.8% fewer than in July 2019, and 59,292 tons of freight, 32.9% lower.
Out of the total number of passengers registered in July, 6,956,202 were commercial passengers with 3,252,939 on domestic flights, 61.9% less than in July 2019, and 3,703,263 on international routes, down by 82.2%.
The airlines resumed their commercial offer for early July coinciding with the lifting of restrictions on travel in Spain and Europe.
Traffic by airports
In July, Palma de Mallorca Airport had the highest number of passengers in the network at 1,102,854 travellers, which is a 73.8% decrease compared to the same month in 2019. It is followed by Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 990,899 (-83.3%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 872,924 (-83.7%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 575,724 (-74.2%); Ibiza, with 426,287 (-68%); Alicante-Elche, with 422,857 (-75.4%) and Gran Canaria, with 381,636 (-64.3%).
In terms of the number of operations, the airport that recorded the highest number of movements in July was Palma de Mallorca with a total of 12,478 (-56.6%), followed by Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 10,708 (-72.5%), Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 10,369 (-68.8%), Málaga-Costa del Sol with 6,939 (-56.3%), Ibiza with 6,587 (-46.2%) and Gran Canaria with 6,046 (-40.7%).
The airports mainly operating non-commercial flights with the highest number of movements in July were Madrid-Cuatro Vientos with 5,651 operations (+9% compared to the same month in 2019), Sabadell with 5,288 (-0.4%) and Jerez with 5,088 (-3.5%).
As far as goods are concerned, 59,292 tons of freight were handled throughout the network in July, 32.9% less than in the same month in 2019 due to the fact that a very significant part of regular freight is carried in commercial passenger planes.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 28,134 tons (-39.2%); Zaragoza with 10,144 tons (-20.9%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 9,320 tons (-40.8%); and Vitoria with 5,746 tons (-8.5%).
