The airports in the Aena network ended 2019 with more than 275.2 million passengers, which is 4.4% more than the previous year and the best performance in their history.
Specifically, the airports totalled 275,237,801 travellers, of which 188.8 million were on international flights, 3.5% more than in 2018, and 85.5 million on domestic flights, up by 6.4%. Out of the total volume of passengers, 274.4 million were on commercial flights, a 4.4% increase.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in 2019 at 61.7 million and a 6.6% increase over 2018. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with over 52.6 million (+5%) and Palma de Mallorca with 29.7 million (+2.2%).
In addition, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport was close to 20 million passengers in 2019 with 19.8 million (4.4%) while another three again broke the 10 million passenger barrier: Alicante-Elche, with just over 15 million (+7.6%); Gran Canaria with 13.2 million (-2.3%) and Tenerife Sur with 11.1 million (+1.1%).
As for the number of operations, in 2019 the Aena airports network handled over 2.3 million movements (2,360,957), 2.6% more than in the previous year. The airport with the highest number of landings and takeoffs was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 426,376 (+4%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 344,558 flights (+2.7%); Palma de Mallorca, with 217,218 (-1.4%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 144,920 (+2.5%); Gran Canaria, with 126,452 (-3.5%); Alicante-Elche, with 101,408 (+4.8%) and Valencia, with 77,699 (+2.5%).
Last year freight carried outperformed 2018 at 1,068,394 tons, which is a 5.6% rise. The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 558,566 tons (+7.4%); Zaragoza with 182,659 tons (+9.5%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 177,271 tons (2.5%), and Vitoria with 64,463 tons (+3.7%).

In December 18,247,407 passengers went through the airports in Aena’s network, a 3.7 % rise compared to December 2018. In terms of the number of operations, a total of 162,940 movements were recorded, 0.6% less than in the same month in 2018, while the total figure for freight traffic was over 95,211 tons, which is 13.6% more.
