Aena Group airports recorded almost 30 million passengers in March

The airports of the Aena Group (comprising the 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton Airport and 17 airports in Brazil) closed the month of March 2026 with 29,999,078 passengers, 4.3% more than in the same month in 2025; they handled 264,381 aircraft movements, 6% more than in 2025; and transported 127,610 tonnes of freight, 0.5% more than in the same month of last year.p

In cumulative terms up to March 2026, 81,263,915 passengers passed through Aena Group airports (3.8% more than in 2025); 704,326 aircraft movements were recorded (+1.3%); and 363,415 tonnes of freight were transported, 4.8% more than in the same period of 2025. Traffic in the first quarter has benefited both from passengers shifting from rail travel (following the train accident on 18 January) and from the timing of Easter, which this year fell between March and April, whereas last year, it fell entirely in April.

Aena Airports in Spain

The airports of the Aena network in Spain have closed March with 24,759,698 passengers, 3.9% more than in the same month of 2025, which nevertheless, implies a growth lower than the 4.2% recorded between March 2025 and March 2024.

In addition, 216,024 aircraft movements were handled in March, 6.8% more than in March 2025; and 114,194 tonnes of freight were transported, 0.1% more than in March last year.

At 5,732,793 passengers, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in March, representing a growth of 4.2% compared to this month last year. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 4,591,353 (+5.4% compared to 2025); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 2,076,522 (+9.4%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1,609,368 (+9.1%); Palma de Mallorca, with 1,594,849 passengers (+2.8%); Gran Canaria, with 1,498,110 (+0.6%); Tenerife Sur, with 1,373,730 (-0.4%); and Valencia, with 1,007,297 passengers, an increase of 4.2% on March 2025.

Gran Canaria and Sevilla Airports have broken their all-time passenger records in March, recording their highest figures ever. Additionally, a monthly record was set in the network as a whole and in 17 other airports, achieving their best figures ever for the month of March: Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Valencia, Sevilla, Bilbao, Ibiza, Asturias, A Coruña, Melilla, Vitoria, Badajoz, Córdoba and the Heliport of Ceuta.

In terms of operations, the airport with the most movements in March was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 37,221 (+4.7% compared to 2025), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 29,252 flights (+3%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 14,222 (+5.4%); Gran Canaria, with 13,309 (-1.5%); Palma de Mallorca, with 13,015 (+3.1%); and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 10,097 landings and take-offs (+7.5%).

Sevilla Airport has broken the all-time record for operations. In addition, March 2026 was the month of March with the highest number of global operations in the Aena network as a whole and in 13 airports: Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Sevilla, A Coruña, Región de Murcia International Airport, Jerez, Melilla, Córdoba, Logroño, Sabadell and Son Bonet.

With regard to freight traffic, the airport with the highest cargo volume was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 67,133 tonnes, 5.3% less than in the same month of 2025. It was followed by Zaragoza Airport, with 18,430 tonnes (+29.6%) a new monthly record; Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 16,128 tonnes (-1.4%); and Vitoria, with 5,866 tonnes (-1.8%). 

In the first three months of 2026, 65,631,150 passengers have passed through Aena airports in Spain (3.2% more than in 2025); 564,787 aircraft movements were recorded (+1.7%) and 325,926 tonnes of freight were transported, 5.5% more than in the same period of 2025.

Aena Brasil Airports

The 17 airports of Aena Brasil reached 3,894,289 passengers last March, 7.2% more than in the same month of 2025. 38,103 aircraft movements were carried out, an increase of 3.3% compared to the same month in 2025, and 12,075 tonnes of freight were transported, up 16.3% compared with the same month last year.

The group of six ANB airports (1) closed the month of March with 1,472,300 passengers (+11.8%). Among them, Recife Airport stands out with 894,105 passengers (+14.2%). There were 13,145 flights (+6.8%), of which Recife managed 7,330 (+2.6%). And 6,466 tonnes of freight were moved (+19.2%), of which 4,993 tonnes corresponded to Recife Airport (+11.1%).

The BOAB group of eleven airports (2) recorded 2,421,989 passengers in March (+4.5% over the same month in 2025). Among them, Congonhas Airport stands out with 2,074,133 passengers (+5.8%). A total of 24,958 flights were handled (+1.6%), of which 18,285 (+3.2%) were at São Paulo airport. And 5,609 tonnes of freight were transported (+13.2%). At Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, 4,954 tonnes were handled, 14.4% more than in the same month of the previous year.

Between January and March 2026, 11,906,736 passengers passed through Aena airports in Brazil (+7.5%); 110,921 aircraft movements were recorded; and 34,054 tonnes of freight were transported, 10.9% more than in the same period of 2025.

London Luton Airport

During the month of March, 1,345,091 passengers(3) passed through London Luton Airport's facilities, 1.8% more than in the same month of 2025. 10,254 aircraft movements were handled (-0.9%) and 1,340 tonnes of freight(4) were transported, 46.3% less than in 2025.

Up to the third month of 2026, 3,726,029 passengers(3) were recorded (+2.9%), 28,618 aircraft movements were handled (-0.7%) and 3,435 tonnes of freight(4) were transported (-51.8%). The decrease in freight traffic is due to the night-time closure of the runway for resurfacing works.
