Aena Group airports exceed 36 million passengers in May

The airports of the Aena Group (comprising the 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton Airport and 17 airports in Brazil) closed the month of May 2026 with 36,116,528 passengers, 4.7% more than in the same month in 2025; they handled 309,102 aircraft movements, 4% more than in 2025; and transported 130,958 tonnes of freight, 3.2% more than in the same month of last year.

In cumulative terms up to May 2026, 150,874,452 passengers passed through Aena Group airports (4% more than in 2025); 1,303,821 aircraft movements were recorded (+2.9%); and 620,182 tonnes of freight were transported, 4.5% more than in the same period of 2025. 

Traffic from January to May has seen an increase in passenger numbers during the early months of the summer season following the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East, coupled with a shift of passengers from rail travel at the start of the year (following the train accident on 18 January). These are two specific circumstances and, therefore, not structural to traffic behaviour.

Aena Airports in Spain

From January to May 2026, the airports of the Aena network in Spain have recorded a total of 124,606,562 passengers (3.7% more than in 2025), representing a lower rate of growth than that recorded in the first five months of last year compared to 2024, when growth stood at 4.7%. 1,066,623 aircraft movements (+3.6%) were handled, and 556,852 tonnes of freight were transported, 5.1% more than in the same period of 2025.

In May, the airports of the Aena network in Spain have recorded a total of 30,690,644 passengers, 5% more than in the same month in 2025. In addition, 259,412 aircraft movements were handled, 4.9% more than in May 2025; and 118,042 tonnes of freight were transported, 3.9% more than in May last year.

At 6,007,105 passengers, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in May, representing a growth of 4.8% compared to this month last year. This is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 5,509,868 (+6.4% compared with 2025); Palma de Mallorca, with 4,009,687 (+4.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 2,748,494 (+6.3%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 2,070,599 (+11.9%); Valencia, with 1,178,277 (+11.8%); Gran Canaria, with 1,175,039 (+1.5%) and Ibiza, with 1,094,236 (+6.1%).

In terms of operations, the airport with the most movements in May was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 39,132 (+6.8% compared to 2025), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 34,738 flights (+4.9%); Palma de Mallorca, with 28,050 (+3.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 18,473 (+2.8%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, 13,131 (+12.3%) and Gran Canaria, with 11,483 landings and take-offs (+3.6%).

With regard to freight traffic, the airport with the highest cargo volume in May was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 69,857 tonnes, 0.8% more than in the same month of 2025. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which recorded 19,483 tonnes (+11.6%); Zaragoza Airport, with 16,509 tonnes (+17.3%); and Vitoria, with 6,002 tonnes (-1.1%). 

Aena Brasil Airports

The 17 airports of Aena Brasil reached 3,693,620 passengers last May, 1% more than in the same month in 2025. 36,546 aircraft movements were carried out, a decrease of 3% compared to the same month in 2025, and 10,822 tonnes of freight were transported, up 1.2% compared to the same month last year.

The group of six ANB airports(1) closed the month of May with 1,289,501 passengers (-0.8%). Among them, Recife Airport stands out with 736,962 passengers (-5.3%). There were 11,942 flights (-2.4%), of which Recife managed 6,281 (-8.9%). And 5,323 tonnes of freight were moved (-3%), of which 3,784 tonnes corresponded to Recife Airport (-9.2%).

The BOAB group of eleven airports(2) recorded 2,404,119 passengers in May (+2% over the same month of 2025). Among them, Congonhas Airport stands out with 2,052,580 passengers (+3.7%). A total of 24,604 flights were handled (-3.3%), of which 17,780 (-0.9%) were at São Paulo airport. And 5,498 tonnes of freight were transported (+5.7%). At Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, 4,811 tonnes were handled, 6% more than in the same month of the previous year.

Between January and May 2026, 19,263,469 passengers passed through Aena airports in Brazil (+5.3%); 183,740 aircraft movements were recorded (-0.6%); and 55,323 tonnes of freight were transported, (+7.5%) more than in the same period of 2025.

London Luton Airport

During the month of May, 1,732,264 passengers(3) passed through London Luton Airport's facilities, 8.2% more than in the same month of 2025. 13,144 aircraft movements were handled (+6.4%) and 2,094 tonnes of freight(4) were transported, 19.1% less than in 2025.

Up to the fifth month of 2026, 7,004,421 passengers(3) were recorded (+4.1%), 53,458 aircraft movements were handled (+1.6%) and 8,006 tonnes of freight(4) were transported (-34.1%). The decrease in freight traffic is due to the night-time closure of the runway for resurfacing works.
