Passengers who are ill or have special medical needs

Consult your doctor

Please consult your general practitioner or specialist about the suitability of flying and any precautions that should be taken in situations such as the following:

  • If you have had a recent operation; in particular, eye, abdominal or lung surgery.
  • If you are travelling with your legs in casts.
  • If you have suffered a heart attack, angina pectoris or have circulatory problems.
  • If you have lung disease or respiratory insufficiency.
  • If you have chronic sinusitis, a middle ear infection or otitis.
  • If you have nasal congestion due to an infection or respiratory allergy.

At the airport

Regulations in force allow travel from any airport in the European Union with medicine for personal use. They should be carried in hand luggage and accompanied by the corresponding medical prescription.

  • Liquid medicines are exempted from the restrictions that affect the carrying of liquids in hand luggage, as long as you need to use them during the journey (departing flight + stay + return flight).
  • Present the medication separately at the security checkpoint, out of the plastic bag that is required for other liquids.
  • Passengers may be required to prove its authenticity at the security checkpoint. It is recommended that, whenever possible, you carry with you your medical prescription or proof of your specific condition.
  • If you need to carry other medical utensils (syringes for diabetics, measurement apparatus, etc.), inform your airline beforehand to find out what procedure you will need to follow.

During the flight

On flights with a duration of more than three hours it is advisable to:

  • Follow certain food and drink guidelines.
  • Carry out some physical exercise during the flight.
  • Closely follow the advice of the aircraft’s crew.

Remember

  • Should you fall ill, the airline’s medical service will study whether you should fly or not and the conditions under which you can fly.
  • You may be transported on a stretcher or given one or more seats. Contact the airline regarding the conditions and fares applicable in each situation.
  • If you are transported on a stretcher, you must be accompanied by another person.
  • Inquire at the security checkpoint about the procedure you must follow if you cannot go through the metal-detector arch.
