Minors who are travelling alone

If the minor is travelling within Spain

We recommend that you contact your airline to confirm whether they accept passengers of this kind and what documents they will ask you for.

If the minor is travelling abroad

Spanish minors who travel outside the national territory, in addition to carrying the ordinary travel documents (passport or Spanish national identity document, where appropriate), will be subject to what the corresponding ministerial authorities have in order to justify their departure from national territory. You can check detailed information on the Ministery of the Interior. website.

In the case of foreign minors who are resident in Spain, their legal representatives or others, depending on the provisions of their respective national regulations, must go to their consular authorities to fill in the appropriate documentation in accordance with their national legislation.

What does the assistance service for minors offered by airlines consist of?

Most airlines offer an assistance service for minors aged 5 to 12 who are travelling alone (this service may have an additional cost). The people responsible for the minor must sign a Waiver of Liability and guarantee that another adult will take charge of the minor at the destination airport.

On departure

From the moment that the minor receives their boarding pass, the airline becomes legally responsible for them. The minor will receive a bag they must carry containing:

  • Their flight ticket.
  • Their identity document.
  • Their parental authorisation.
  • Identification sheet with the contact details of the person responsible for collecting them at the destination airport.

On arrival

As a general rule, minors will be accompanied out of the plane last, accompanied by airline personnel.

After collecting their baggage, the minor is handed over to the person responsible, after this person’s identity has been verified.

Remember

Remember

  • Ask your airline whether it offers an assistance service for children between 5 and 12 years old who are travelling alone (provided that the child’s parents or guardians sign a Waiver of Liability and ensure that an adult will be waiting for the child in the destination airport).
  • Ask your airline whether it offers lounges for unaccompanied children.
