DEPARTURES AREA

Check-in

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport has two large terminal buildings: T1 and T2. The airport allocates airlines to terminals, regardless of the destination of the flight.

You should arrive at the airport with enough time to avoid unexpected problems. The general rule is:

  • Non-Schengen flights: 3 hours before the scheduled departure time.
  • Domestic and Schengen flights: 2 hours before the scheduled departure time.

Most airlines allow passengers to check in online on their website prior to travelling to the airport. You will receive your boarding pass when checking in, allowing you to proceed directly to the security checkpoints if you are travelling with carry-on luggage only.

Remember to print off all your travel documents (e-ticket, boarding pass, etc.). Please note that some airlines charge a fee to reissue boarding passes at the airport.

With mobile online check-in, you can check in and receive your boarding pass on your mobile device via email, SMS or mobile applications. If you do not have to check in you can go straight to the security checkpoint

Self check-in

Self-check-in

The airport has self check-in machines on the check-in floor of terminal T1.

The self check-in machines are available for Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air France, KLM, American Airlines, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, Delta Airlines, Egyptair, Iberia, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Royal Air Maroc, Swissair, Turkish Airlines and Vueling.

You can locate them with the Aena Maps guiding system inside the airport, which you can access here.

Delta, Lufthansa, Swissair and Vueling have dedicated self check-in machines for their customers.

Furthermore, there are also self check-in machines in Terminal 1 for passengers with a connecting flight in boarding areas A and B for Schengen arrivals and before the connecting checkpoints on Floor 2 for non-Schengen arrivals.

Self Bag Drop

Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Swissair and Vueling also have dedicated "Self Bag Drop" check-in lanes for passengers who wish to drop off their baggage themselves.

With this service, passengers can self check their baggage through an automated system.

To use it, passengers must check in at one of the airline's self check-in machines and obtain baggage ID tags. Passengers can leave their tagged bags on the check-in belts where self-service machines will weigh and validate the baggage.

DEPARTURES AREA

Security checks

All passengers must go through the security checkpoint to get to the boarding area. They must pass through a metal detector and their carry-on luggage and other objects (coats, jackets, mobile phones, keys) must pass through an X-ray machine. Accepted liquids and electronic equipment without a cover must be removed from the carry-on luggage. To ensure items and small articles in particular pass through the scan, passengers must place them in the special trays put at their disposal.

Passengers will be asked for their boarding pass before they go through the security checkpoint.

The airport has special access in terminal T1 for people with reduced mobility, prams and pushchairs, and crew.

Both terminals have a Fast Lane which airlines can use for their preferential passengers.

DEPARTURES AREA

Passport Control

If the destination of your flight is a non-Schengen country, you must go through document control.

The basic travel document is a passport, although you can travel to some countries with a National ID card (DNI). Some countries also require a visa, vaccination certificate, passport valid for 6 months after the date of arrival, etc. Check with your airline.

DEPARTURES AREA

Boarding

Please check the information screens to find your boarding gate. Please pay attention to these screens because Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport does not make PA system announcements about boarding gates or changes made to existing gates.

The Barcelona-El Prat boarding area includes a large shopping area where special offers and discounts are available in the duty free shops and well-known fashion, accessories, electronics, sports, gifts and toy outlets. Enjoy a varied, carefully selected offer of cafés and restaurants and relax in our VIP lounges. The entire shopping area has a number of information screens on which you can check the boarding gate for your flight at any time.

At the boarding gate, you must show the airline personnel documentation to prove your identity. Please ask your airline about valid documentation to present to their personnel.
