The airports in Aena’s network handled over 24.6 million passengers in May, 3.4% more than in the same month in 2018. The total number of travellers came to precisely 24,626,673, of which 24,559,705 were commercial passengers with 17,228,436 on international flights, 2.7% more than in May 2018, and 7,331,269 on domestic flights, up by 5.3%.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in May at 5,218,420, which is a 5.2% increase over the same month in 2018. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 4,681,748 (2.9% more); Palma de Mallorca with 3,181,572 (+0.9%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 1,914,220 (+4.2%); Alicante-Elche, with 1,402,153 (+7.2%); Gran Canaria with 930,396 (-4.5%); Ibiza with 887,678 (+1.5%); Tenerife Sur with 794,615 (+5.2%); Valencia with 747,031 (+9.6%); and Seville with 685,045 (+9.6%).
In the first five months of 2019 passenger traffic rose by 5.6% with a total of 100,640,991 passengers going through the airports in Aena’s network.
Operations
As for the number of operations, there were 213,965 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in May, 3% more than in the same month in the previous year.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 37,225 (+4.5%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 31,164 flights (+1.5%); Palma de Mallorca with 22,890 (-0.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 13,988 (+6.1%); Gran Canaria with 9,588 (-4.2%); Alicante-Elche with 9,496 (+6.2%); Ibiza with 7,812 (-0.6%); Valencia with 6,858 (-0.4%); Tenerife Norte with 6,389 (+0.4%); Seville with 5,963 (+16.3%); and Tenerife Sur with 5,061 (+7.4%).
In the first five months of 2019, the airports in Aena’s network operated 899,389 aircraft for departures and arrivals which is a 5.2% rise over the same period in the previous year.
Freight
In May 85,598 tons of freight were carried which is a 3.1% increase compared to May 2018.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 44,789 tons (+4.5%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 14,606 tons (+1.2%); Zaragoza with 12,859 tons (+2.3%); and Vitoria with 5,659 tons (+2.4%).
From January to May 422,413 tons of freight were handled in the airports in Aena’s network which means 4.9% growth compared to the first five months in 2018.
