The airports in Aena’s network have closed January with over 16.5 million passengers, 7% more than in the same month last year.
The total number of travellers came to precisely 16,583,200, of which 16,531,182 were commercial passengers with 10,813,423 on international flights, 7.1% more than in January 2018, and 5,717,759 on domestic flights, up by 7.4%.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in the first month of the year at 4,386,788, which is a 6.2% increase over the same month in 2018. It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 3,274,938 million (7.1% more); Gran Canaria with 1,180,487 and no increase; Tenerife Sur with 1,019,034 (5.3%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 1,013,408 (8.4%); Palma de Mallorca with 839,130 (19%); and Alicante-Elche with 784,938 (11.2%).
Operations
As for the number of operations, there were 159,558 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in January, 8.1% more than in the same month in 2018.
The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 32,905 (4.9%), followed by Barcelona-El Prat with 24,005 flights (7.2%); Gran Canaria with 11,402 (0.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 8,525 (9.5%); Palma de Mallorca with 8,468 (20.2%); Tenerife Sur with 6,775 (9.8%); Tenerife Norte with 6,016 (8.4%); and Alicante-Elche with 6,012 (11.8%).
Freight
In January 77,326 tons of freight were carried which is a 3.9% increase compared to the first month of 2018.
The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 39,724 tons (5%); Barcelona-El Prat with 12,978 tons (5.9%); Zaragoza with 12,420 tons (8.0%); and Vitoria with 5,145 tons (-4.3%).
