Vitoria Airport, located eight kilometres from the city, in the district of Foronda, handles an outstanding volume of cargo traffic. In 2019, it was the fourth largest Spanish airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Zaragoza and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, in terms of cargo volume.

The Vitoria Airport has undergone incredible growth in cargo traffic, especially in 1994 (in 1993, 427 MT were handled), due to the selection of the airport by some freight companies as the arrival point for goods (perishables) for further distribution and as the point of departure for other types of goods (parcels). International cargo traffic has also increased dramatically since the removal of customs barriers between EU countries.
