Introduction

Vitoria airport, located eight kilometres from the city, in the district of Foronda, handles an outstanding volume of cargo traffic. In 2014, it was the fourth largest Spanish airport, after Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and Zaragoza, in terms of cargo volume.

The Vitoria airport has undergone high growth in cargo traffic, especially in 1994 (in 1993, 427 MT were handled), due to the selection of the airport by some freight companies as the arrival point for goods (perishables) for further distribution and as the point of departure for other types of goods (parcels). International cargo traffic has also increased dramatically since the removal of customs barriers between EU countries.

In 2015, 11,182 passengers used the facilities, 6,840 flights were operated and 46,372 tonnes of cargo were transported.
