After several years of almost stagnating freight traffic, in 2014 the group of member airports of the Airports Council International (ACI) saw trends being reversed, when air freight grew by 4.7% compared to 2013. This trend was consolidated in 2015, and the freight experienced a growth of 2.6%, and was further boosted in 2016, with a significant annual growth rate of 4%.

In 2014, following the trend marked by global freight traffic, the ACI Europe airports experienced a 5% growth compared to the previous year. This trend was not consolidated in 2015, however, when freight volumes increased by a mere 0.5%. Subsequently, in 2016 the freight once again experienced a growth of 5%, in line with global traffic trends.

Over the last five years, the airports within Aena's network - all of which are members of ACI Europe - have maintained a quota in ACI Europe of around 4%.

Freight traffic at national airports has evolved very positively over the last five years, with increases of 4.6% in 2015, 11.7% in 2016, 15% in 2017, 9.9% in 2018 and 5.6% in 2019, compared to previous years.

In 2019, the volume of transported goods in the airports within the Network was more than 1,068,394 tonnes.

In terms of airports, the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport represented 52.3% of the Spanish national market, with a total of 558,566 tonnes, followed by Zaragoza airport, representing 17.1%, with 182,659 tonnes.
