The naming of Zaragoza as the host city for the 2008 International Expo led to considerable development and promotion of the city and its infrastructure. Zaragoza Airport also underwent modernisation, and the projects carried out in 2007 and 2008 made it one of the most advanced in the network: a new terminal, the extension of the taxiway and aircraft apron, new roadway layouts and the construction of car parks and public spaces. Subsequently, new infrastructure works have been developed, such as the extension of the firefighting service building, improvements to the power plant and the urbanisation of the industrial area, all examples of new infrastructure implemented to provide the Aragonese people with an airport meeting their needs and expectations.

All of these future challenges must be faced with complete consideration of environmental values. This has meant the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) with working procedures that improve environmental activities and ensure applicable legal requirements are met.

The AENOR environmental certificate, awarded according to the UNE-EN ISO 14001 standard, was renewed in 2012. The airport is also a member of the Local Agenda 21 Club, managed by Zaragoza City Council and the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of Zaragoza, so it is aligned with the club's environmental objectives. The club brings together organisations in the Zaragoza area with certified environmental management systems.

Integrated into environmental management, the airport has been certified for its energy management system, in compliance with the UNE-EN ISO 50001:2011 standard for the terminal and outdoor lighting systems for its roadways and car parks. Among the airport's objectives is the gradual expansion of the energy management system to other airport buildings and installations.

Meanwhile, as part of Aena's quality and environment strategy, in 2012 Zaragoza Airport also obtained the renewal of the AENOR certificate for its quality management system, according to the UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 standard.

In order to ensure the participation of Spanish society in general, and Aragonese society in particular, in the results of its sustainable development strategy, which is intended to ensure the compatibility of aviation and airport activities with the conservation of the environment, since 2006 Zaragoza airport has published a report on its environmental management, the latest edition of which can be downloaded from this site.
