Accompanied minors

If you are travelling with children under 14 years old, please take into account the following recommendations:

  • Children under 14 years old travelling with their parents may travel throughout Spanish territory without documentation. However, some companies request to see the Family Record Book registration, in accordance with their internal policies. We recommend that you contact your airline to confirm the documentation that you may need.
  • Children older than 14 years old should carry the same documentation as adults.
  • The majority of companies provide special services for children –games, books, etc.– and also children's menus, if requested in advance.

Travel by or with children is subject to specific restrictions. Border police, both inside and outside the European Union, have a specific mandate to pay special attention to children, whether accompanied or not.

If the children are travelling accompanied, the border guard may request documentation proving the parental authority of the accompanying person(s) or of those signing the authorisation for the child to travel with another adult. In addition, if the child is accompanied by only one of his or her parents, express authorisation may also be requested from the absent parent or a more detailed investigation may be carried out if it is suspected that the child may have been unlawfully removed from the person having custody.

Minors travelling with one parent only or with a person who does not exercise parental authority must bring the following documentation:

  • Express authorization, where appropriate, of the parents, the absent parent or the person legally exercising parental authority.
  • Ordinary travel documents (passport or National Identity Document).
  • Documentation that proves the parentage and parental rights according to the case and the country of destination.

The authorisation type and the circumstances in which it is required are highly variable depending on the destination country, its legislation and local habits. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult the Embassy or Consulate of the destination country.

The authorization is mandatory from 1 Septiembre 2019. You can download the form in these links:
