The airport has built a waste transfer plant to properly treat the urban waste produced by airport and aeronautical activity.

This plant incorporates mechanisms that, thanks to their design, allow for   the non-selective collection of urban waste and its completely sanitary handling in its storage and compacting processes. Furthermore, it has selective collection receptacles for paper and cardboard, glass and light containers. In this way, the airlines can properly handle this waste once they have separately collected it on their aircrafts.

Currently, the airport selectively collects paper and cardboard in its administration and retail areas and is now implementing a selective collection of glass and containers in these same areas, especially in the restaurants.

Dangerous waste

Certain airport activities produce waste that is officially classified as dangerous. Most of this is made up of used mineral oils, batteries, fluorescent tubes, absorbing agents contaminated by the collection of hydrocarbons, empty contaminated containers, etc.

The processing of this waste should guarantee the protection of human health and the environment, as well as the conservation of natural resources. The airport handles hazardous waste in accordance with current legislation and has hired various waste mangers authorised by the Balearic Island Government's Department of the Environment for this task.
