The airports in Aena’s network handled over 16.9 million passengers in January, a 2.4% increase

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is the network leader by number of passengers at more than 4.6 million (6.3% increase), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with almost 3.4 million (3.7% increase)

Aircraft movements stand at over 156,000 operations in terms of landings and take-offs, down by 1.9%.

Freight traffic grew by 12.5% to over 86,900 tons

The airports in Aena’s network have closed January with over 16.9 million passengers, 2.4% more than in the same month last year. The total number of travellers came to precisely 16,982,161, of which 16,909,539 were commercial passengers with 10,974,720 on international flights, 1.5% more than in January 2019, and 5,934,819 on domestic flights, up by 3.8%.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport had the highest number of passengers in the first month of the year at 4,663,407, which is a 6.3% increase over the same month in 2019. It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 3,396,470 (3.7%increase); Gran Canaria, with 1,166,742 (-1.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 1,042,347 (2.9%); Tenerife Sur, with 949,286 (-6.8%); Palma de Mallorca, with 820,661 (-2.2%); and Alicante-Elche, with 743,713 (-5.3%).

Operations

As for the number of operations, there were 156,556 aircraft movements in Aena’s airport network in January, 1.9% less than in the same month in 2019.

The airport with the highest number of movements was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with a total of 33,293 (+1.2%), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 23,445 flights (-2.3%); Gran Canaria with 10,584 (-7.2%); Málaga-Costa del Sol with 8,432 (-1.1%); Palma de Mallorca with 7,660 (-9.5%); Tenerife Norte with 5,994 (-0.4%); Tenerife Sur with 5,982 (-11.7%); Valencia with 5.474 (-4.3%); and Alicante-Elche with 5,409 (-10%).

Freight

In January 86,957 tons of freight were carried which is a 12.5% increase compared to the first month of 2019.

The four airports with the highest freight traffic were Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with 45,834 tons (+15.4%); Zaragoza with 14,977 tons (+20.6%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 13,769 tons (+6.1%); and Vitoria with 5,252 tons (+2.1%).
