The Aena Foundation organises conferences on aeronautical history conferences every year.


Conferences on Aeronautical History of the Aena Foundation

In order to promote the study, research and interest in those subjects related to air navigation and transport, every year the Aena Foundation organises three-day conferences on aeronautical history which are attended by specialists in this field. The speeches and debates in these meetings are published every year in a monographic volume.


I Jornadas
Origin and development of air transport in Spain.
Held in Madrid in December 1997, the evolution of air transport since its start was analysed, along with its consolidation in the forties, the appearance of unscheduled airlines and the step from the propeller to the reaction engine. The speeches also discussed the development of air transport legislation.
II Jornadas
Seventy-five years of the Spanish aeronautical industry.
The conferences organised in Madrid in October 1998 discussed the history of aviation in Spain from its first experiences in balloons and airships. The conferences remembered the Spanish pioneers of aircraft construction, the challenge of the autogiro and the contribution of the Hispano-Suiza aeronautical industry. The development of CASA since its creation and the history of the first two decades of operations of the National Aerospace Technique Institute (INTA).
III Jornadas
Air navigation in Spain.
In November 1999, the conferences were aimed at the progress of air navigation from the traditional observation systems to the inertial systems or the satellite assisted procedures and the modern aircraft equipment, all with the objective of bringing security into line with the increasingly intense air traffic. The speakers also discussed the organisation of navigation in Spain and its international regulation.
IV Jornadas
Spanish airports.
The singularity of airport infrastructures from the early airports in Barcelona, Alicante and Malaga, created in 1919, to the recent contributions of architecture and the design of Calatrava were the subject of debate at the 4th Aeronautical Conferences held in Madrid in November 2000. The new management models, the solutions to the growing demand for air services and the socio-economic repercussions of the large airports in their environment were also analysed.
V Jornadas
Aeronautical teachings.
The training of pilots, together with their origins in military training, has progressed greatly since the basic procedures learnt in the first aerodrome of Cuatro Vientos in 1911 to the modern simulators that provide great professional skill at no risk and at a minimal cost. The history of this boom involving pilots, engineers, mechanics and controllers was the argument of the 5th Conferences held in Madrid in October 2001.
VI Jornadas
Spanish airlines.
The airlines are, among the different components of air transport, the closest element to passengers. The “national” companies have historically had a unique value in the commercial, political and strategic development of their countries. In the case of Spain, various stages have been crossed since the monopoly of the national services of Iberia to the current liberalisation. All of this, as well as issues related to aeronautical maintenance, the services provided, its relationship to air navigation and stopovers, etc. are the issues discussed this year, including the speeches presented at the Conferences held in October 2002.
VII Jornadas
A Hundred Years of Aviation 1903-2003
The year 2003 marks the centenary of man's conquest of the air. The 7th Conference on Historical Studies about Aeronautics covers the most remarkable feats in aviation's history, from the brothers Wright's exploit to the present. During the conference's three sessions, several topics were addressed, such as the first flights that took place in Spain; aviation pioneers and adventurers; the air force; commercial aviation; the aeronautic industry; air transport, and 21st-century aeronautics.
VIII Jornadas
Aerial Sports.
In October 2004, Madrid celebrated the 8th Edition of the Aeronautic Studies Seminar, which covered different aspects of aerial sports: ballooning, parachuting, gliding, the Royal Air Club of Spain, acrobatics, air rallies and ultralight aviation. It also covered the origins, development and future of aerial sports, as well as their infrastructures and institutional framework.
IX Jornadas
Sciences and Aeronautical Techniques in Spain
The relationship between aeronautics and science and the various techniques that can be used to verify this relationship provided the subject matter of the conference held in October 2005. Flying machines, (the design and construction of aircraft in Spain, rotating wings and propelling systems), the conquest of science by aeronautics (aerodynamics, electrical systems on land and in the air), and pathways in space (navigation and aeronautical communications, the space adventure and rockets, missiles and other aerospace devices) were the topics discussed.
X Jornadas
Madrid-Barajas:75 years of history.
Coinciding with the celebration, in 2006, of this Madrid airport's seventy-fifth anniversary, the 10th Historical Aeronautical Studies Conference focussed on research and analysis of various facets that are directly related to the past, present and future of this veteran air terminal: the birth of this airport, its architecture, the runways, its development and growth, the airlines, airport management, Plan Barajas or its socio-economic influence on the surrounding area.
XI Jornadas
Figures of Spanish Aeronautics I.
The personalities that, from different dimensions, made the development of Spanish aeronautics in Spain possible took centre stage at the XI Jornadas de Estudios Históricos Aeronáuticos (XI Conferences of Historic Aeronautical Studies). Various specialists talked about pioneers such as Esteban Terradas e Illa, Jorge Loring Martínez, Emilio Herrera Linares, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, Luis Azcárraga, José Ortiz Echagüe, Pedro Vives, Alfredo Kindelán and Alfonso de Orleáns y Borbón, who, with their training and intelligence, and on occasions personal sacrifice, made it possible to place Spanish aeronautics in a worthy position within the international context. The focus of these Conferences will be continued in successive editions, which will deal with other personalities of Spanish aeronautics.
XII Jornadas
Figures of Spanish Aeronautics II.
For the second consecutive year, the Aena Foundation has dedicated the Jornadas de Estudios Aeronáuticos (Aeronautical Studies Seminars) to summarising the life of those people who have excelled in their contribution to the creation and development of aeronautics in Spain. The people were chosen on the basis of three different perspectives. The first was military aviation (Hidalgo de Cisneros, Ángel Salas and Tomás Castaño), the second the commercial market (Horacio de Echevarrieta and Teodosio Pombo) and the third, different but complementary to the above, represents the biographies of the engineers Juan de la Cierva and Francisco López-Pedraza. As a coda, two very special people were also included, the mechanic Pablo Rada and Mari Pepa Colomer, pioneer of Spanish sports aviation.
XIII Jornadas
Domestic and international aeronautical organisations.
The study by a group of aeronautical bodies, generally not very well known, thanks to which aeronautics, transport and air navigation work in a coordinated and harmonious manner, was the object of the 13th Jornadas de Estudios Históricos Aeronáuticos (Historic Aeronautical Studies Seminars). Nine specialists put forward the history, objectives, characteristics and operation of different professional and business associations and international bodies, each with a different specialisation and mission, but with the same ultimate mission: to keep air transport in good working order.
XIV Jornadas
Made in Spain. Aircraft manufactured in Spain.
The issue tackled at this event complements the subject matter of previous gatherings, as the nine conferences have focused on the most outstanding aircraft models that have been totally or partially made in Spain since the beginnings of aviation. If the Spanish presence in producing the Airbus A400M is well known, then the fact that the roots of the country's aeronautical industry go back to the origin of the science is not so well known. The first aircraft were already being built in Spain between 1909 and 1911. This fact, along with others, such as the Spanish contribution to the field of airships, the construction of aeroplanes and the manufacture of rotary wing aircraft, are little known to the general public and even to specialists.
XV Jornadas
Cuatro Vientos. A century of aeronautical history.
The Aena Foundation is joining in the celebration of the centenary of Madrid-Cuatro Vientos aerodrome, and is dedicating this edition of the Jornadas de Estudios Aeronáuticos (Aeronautical Studies Conference) to the first 100 years of history of this aerodrome. The conference will focus on analysing the uses of this aerodrome during its century of existence, from its beginnings as a military base to its present outstanding activity in the field of general aviation, training, and as a base for important public services (security, medical services, traffic control, etc.).
XVI Jornadas
Spanish aerospace technology and industry.
The subject of this edition, so closely related to air navigation, was intended to complement the content of previous editions. Its nine lectures focused on a subject as relevant and current as Spanish aerospace industry and technology. Aerospace has required extensive scientific, technical and industrial development, and Spain has been a part of this. This fundamental chapter in our aviation history is little known, which is why the Aena Foundation has contributed to these conferences with the knowledge it has acquired in the field of aerospace technology and industry.
XVII Jornadas
Figures of Spanish Aeronautics III.
As a complement to the themes of the 2008 and 2009 Sessions, this edition's topic addressed the biographies of nine outstanding personalities of our aeronautical history. Divided into three thematic sections, in the first, Flight pioneers, tribute was paid to Antonio Fernández and José Piñeiro; in the second, Engineers and scientists, the careers of Manuel Bada Vasalo, Carlos Sánchez Tarifa and José Pazó were presented; and in The transport route the biographies of Pierre Georges Latécoère, Luis Tapia Salinas, Enrique Mapelli López and Salvador Hedilla were reviewed.
