Economic dimension of sustainability
Since its creation in 1991, Aena has been self-funding, through income from the rates for the different services it provides for its users and with external funding from capital markets. It has never had to resort to public funding (except for European funds) and therefore, it has never cost the taxpayer anything. In this context, Aena:
- Has dealt with a spectacular increase in air traffic, which has multiplied by 2.5 since 1990, with the highest levels of safety and quality.
- Has made the biggest investment in the history of Spanish Airports: investing 17,000 million Euros in the period 2000-2010, in extending and modernising airport and air navigation infrastructure.
- Has increased the number of airports and thus the size of the airport network, from 40 to 47 airports plus 2 heliports, with the inclusion of the airports of Albacete, La Gomera, León, Logroño-Agoncillo, Madrid-Torrejón, Burgos, Huesca-Pirineos and the heliports of Ceuta and Algeciras.
- And all with some of the lowest airport fees in Europe.
