Best practice in environmental sustainability
In tune with its Environmental Policy, Aena integrates environmental management with its business activities and services, through implementation of environmental management systems, in accordance with Standard ISO 14001 and EMAS Regulations.
- Aena approved in 2010 the new Environmental and Energy Policy, which enhances and gives more prominence to energy consumption and efficiency in its activities.
- On the occasion of the implementation of the Sustainable Economy Act, law 2/2011, Aena has begun the necessary analyses of aspects which impact its activity, in order to introduce the principles of the law where these are not already integrated in its management practices.
Examples of Aena best practices in environmental sustainability
- Noise Abatement Plans
In 2011, Aena invested more than 252 million euros in the execution of Noise Abatement Plans, insulating more than 17,400 homes.
- Green airports:
With this project, Aena will gradually implement, in all the airports in the network, a more efficient use of energy and reduced consumption, opting whenever possible for renewable energy sources.
- Green Routes:
Madrid-Barajas airport is the first in the Aena network to introduce “green landings”, an approach manoeuvre consisting of a continuous descent without horizontal stretches and with the engines at minimum power, thereby enabling an average reduction of 25% in CO2 emissions in each approach manoeuvre and a saving of 25% in fuel consumption, as well as a substantial reduction in noise pollution in the area around the airport.
Airlines have been able to carry out this type of manoeuvre at night since 26 August 2010. Some airlines already use it, especially for transatlantic flights which arrive at Barajas in the early morning. In 2010, as well as in Madrid-Barajas, these manoeuvres were introduced in the airports of Alicante, Barcelona-El Prat, Girona-Costa Brava, Grand Canary, Malaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Majorca, Santiago, Tenerife Sur, Valencia and Vitoria. In 2011 and 2012 it is planned to introduce them during daytime at A Coruña, Almería, Asturias, FGL Granada-Jaén, Jerez, La Palma, Pamplona, San Sebastián, Santander, Santiago and Vigo.
The airports in the Aena network are among the most active in the European Union in implementing “green landings” which according to data from the Airports Council International (ACI), are now used in 33 European airports.
